Why YLA needs to exist:

  • According to the State of Black America (SOBA), African-American men are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as white males and make only 75 percent as much a year. They're nearly seven times more likely to be incarcerated, and their average jail sentences are 10 months longer than those of white men. In addition, young black males between the ages of 15-34 years old are more likely to die of homicide than their white counterprts and nearly seven times as likely to suffer from AIDS.
  • Baton Rouge continues to be one of the biggest crime cities in the state and even in the country. Please refer to Baton Rouge Crime Statistics : http://brgov.com/dept/brpd/csr/
  • For more than 19 years, the Academy, through its service to more than 250 boys and their families, has been on the front line in Baton Rouge, providing quality programs and compassionate leadership designed specifically to help close the equality gaps here in our community. YLA provides young African American males with the support needed to achieve educational successes and become happy, healthy and productive adults.
